Two gadgets for this Christmas

Two gadgets to look forward during this Christmas in UK

First one is iPhones. Internet is full of the hypes, reviews and artistic destructions…I am fairly impressed with the gadget for its user interface design and screen size. My only worry is battery life as it seems, runs out within 8 hours of use. O2 seems to be leading the race for being Apple partner in UK.

 

Second device is not hyped or covered by BBC as many times it has covered iPhone. This is new technology revolution which is about hit computing world this year. Solid state memories have found a standard use as USB flash disks for some years now. Now, Samsung, SanDisk and many more are releasing the NAND based solid state drives (SSD) to replace the hard disks on laptops and PCs. They have already started manufacturing for OEMs – 32GB to begin with.

Let me list some of the gains I noted on manufacturers' site:

1. Windows Vista OS boots at 50% faster (some tests quotes: in less than 35 seconds!)

2. Reads at speed from 53 to 62MB per second

3. Write is 100 to 150% faster than of hard disks

4. For a sample file, hard disk’s access rate was 55 seconds and 19 milliseconds where as the SSD's rate is 0.12 milliseconds

5. Uses 50% less power than HDD

6. Weighs less

7. No moving parts. Less susceptible to socks and mean time between failures: two million hours
